I've just discovered that the name Deltigar the Destroyer
has been slapped on a bit of merchandise. Not sure how I feel about that. Deltigar
has a long history with me.
When I was in 10th grade, around 1978 and 9, I first got the bug to write. I started my first story, right there on the dining room table. I figured out names and characters, and an overall story arc for the trilogy. Yes, even back then I thought in terms of trilogies.
The hero of what I imagined to be my first book was Captain Deltigar Danel Ralex Linter
. As I think about it now I realize that given the size of the ship he was to command, basically a species saving ark, perhaps he should have been an Admiral.
Anyway, after I got the first page written I stopped writing, thinking I had plenty of time and I would finish it later. Naturally I never did.
My grandmother said it best when she read it. "It's good, but where's the next page?"
When computer games came about, they started asking for things like character names. So I used Deltigar
. Often. Then came bulletin boards. I was a Sysop on a WWIV based board (Pocket Universe), and I used Deltigar for my handle. Soon thereafter I realized that more people in the world new me as Deltigar
than as Dennis.
It was around this time that I started writing a zombie story, and used Deltigar
as the main "dead" character. I later changed it. I got to about 10,000 words in that one. Never finished it. I kept thinking I had all the time in the world, and that whole divorce thing got in the way.
Anyway, it remains today and a simple google search will land you plenty of examples of where I have used it. Just ignore that Destroyer guy. Unless you are into that sort of thing.
